A 73-year-old British man has died and dozens of people have been injured after a Singapore Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence over Myanmar.
Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 departed London on Monday at 10:38 pm and was bound for Singapore. The incident occurred about five hours into the flight, over the Irrawaddy Basin.
According to the aviation tracking site FlightRadar24, the plane experienced sudden extreme turbulence at an altitude of 36,000 feet. The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the plane to Bangkok, where it made an emergency landing at 15:45 local time.
Singapore Airlines said in a statement that the plane's cabin crew and passengers were seated and wearing their seatbelts at the time of the incident.
The injured passengers were taken to local hospitals for treatment, and the airline said that it is providing assistance to the families of the deceased and injured passengers.
